Some people associate March with the arrival of Spring or collegiate basketball tournaments or for National Craft Month (see the APL’s 3rd Floor Display). However, for many living in Massachusetts, St. Patrick’s Day and the celebration of all things Irish takes center stage, for National Irish American Heritage Month!
Boston is widely considered the most Irish city in America and has been host to a celebration of Irish Heritage since 1737. There is the famous Southie St. Patrick’s Day Parade (held the Sunday closest to the holiday) and a charity 5K run.
Alternately, did you know that Boston had an Irish Heritage Trail? Walk around the 20 highlighted sites through Downtown Boston and Back Bay or learn about some of the significant sites in the metro Boston area.
If music is what you are seeking, check out Boston’s own Dropkick Murphys for Celtic Punk or perhaps more traditional tunes at WGBH Public Radio’s A St. Patrick’s Day Celtic Sojourn.
If you prefer movies, check out the annual Irish Film Festival. Closer to home, the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton holds events throughout the year and a special program on St. Patrick’s Day.
Join us at the Attleboro Public Library as we join the fun and celebration with fiction and non fiction books and eBooks, cookbooks, fantastic photographic travelogues, and music highlighting this rich cultural heritage. Our Irish Heritage Month Pinterest board can get your exploring started!
