The Augat Children’s Room has recently added Early Literacy Kits to its Learning Resource Collection. These Early Literacy Kits were made possible through a generous donation from the Attleboro Rotary Club.
The kits are made up of 4 or 5 books along with a parent tip/activity card for each title. There are specific age ranges for the kits; 0-2 years, 2-5 years and 5+ years, so that patrons can choose the kits that are appropriate for their child’s development. The library has kits in English, Spanish and some that are English/Spanish bilingual.
Providing families with the tools to emphasize the importance of reading together is the first step in ensuring academic success for all students. The Early Literacy Kits provide families with hands-on strategies for building literacy at home, reinforce the fact that parents are their child’s first and most important teacher, and build text-rich environments at home by providing take-home books and other parent resources for families. The skills that are emphasized by using the kits include alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, oral language and concepts of print.
The next time you are at the library, take a look at the Early Literacy Kits. Check them out, bring them home, and start sharing stories with your child!
