Mass. Center for the Book’s May Reading Prompt

Are you participating in the Mass. Center for the Book Reading Challenge for 2024? If you haven’t been, it’s not too late to find inspiration from some of the prompts! Your mission in May is to read a graphic novel, which is a great entry point into this challenge. (We have a display on the first floor connected to this month’s challenge in addition to our graphic novel collection located on the third floor.) Graphic novels offer all the nuance and complexity of full-print titles, and often cover a lot of the same themes; the graphic nature can make them a very quick read, if it’s something you are unsure about.

If you can tell us what types of books you usually like to read, we can find you a graphic novel that will be similar–the possibilities really are endless! In the meantime, I recommend these titles below. Some are just being published this year, and some have been around a few years, but all will make you think about books with pictures in a totally new way.

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 by Emil Ferris
Woman World and A Witch’s Guide to Burning by Aminder Dhaliwal
Go to Sleep (I Miss You): Cartoons from the Fog of New Parenthood by Lucy Knisley
Monica by Daniel Clowes
A Career in Books: A Novel about Friends, Money and the Occasional Duck Bun by Kate Gavino
