Did you know that there is whole selection of eBooks and audiobooks, available from the library for free, at your fingertips? These titles can be downloaded and used on a number of devices and, thanks to the new Libby app, it is easier to do than ever!
In order to provide you with this service we use a site called OverDrive. You can browse the catalog of downloadable eBooks and audiobooks at sails.overdrive.com. Just log in with your library card, browse the selection, place holds, and check out. You can read or listen to them from your PC or laptop or you can send them to your Kindle!
You can also use the new Libby app to do all of this from a smartphone or tablet as well. The Libby app is particularly great if you like to listen to audiobooks when you’re on-the-go or don’t have access to a CD player. The Libby app is also great if you read eBooks primarily on a Kindle. You can download instructions for using the Libby app here and you can download instructions for using eBooks and audiobooks on your PC or laptop here.
Using eBooks and audiobooks has a lot of great benefits. For one, you can load up your device with up to six titles at a time- which is great if you are going away for the weekend. Another great benefit of eBooks and audiobooks is that you can access them anytime! We know life gets busy and that you can’t always make it to the library during open hours. The good news is that you can download eBooks and audiobooks whenever you have the time, wherever you have access to Wi-Fi – which we all know is pretty much everywhere. Another thing that lots of people love about using eBooks and audiobooks is that you don’t have to worry about returning them- eBooks and audiobooks return automatically after 7, 14, or 21 days depending on the loan period you select so there is no worrying about overdue fines! And did you know you make the text on an eBook larger or smaller depending on your preference? The list goes on an on.
If you already purchase eBooks for your eReader or use services like Audible then you will love using OverDrive to borrow eBooks and audiobooks from the library. If you are just getting started with a new device we know that borrowing library books on it may seem daunting, but we promise that it is as easy as it ever has been and we are here to help! You can start right away by downloading the instructions linked above or you can call or stop by the Reference desk on the second floor of the library. As people who work in a library we know nothing can match the feeling of holding a book in your hands, but instant access to a great new read or listen is a close second!
